Watch It Wednesday #50

Plastic pollution is a major global problem. From millions of tonnes entering the oceans every year, to microplastics being found everywhere from Mount Everest to human blood samples, it is a pervasive problem with a significant environmental impact.

Sway is a California based start-up looking to reduce plastic pollution by directly decreasing the use of thin-film single use plastics. Their solution? bio-based plastic alternatives made from seaweed!

Sway’s trials have shown that products derived from these robust and flexible ocean plants can be extremely versatile food and product wrapping materials. Further, the controlled growth of the seaweeds used can have positive benefits such as providing habitat for marine life and mitigating ocean acidification.
