Watch It Wednesday #48
The greatest challenge and opportunity to reduce carbon emissions is by changing how we produce the energy we use. This means electrifying sectors reliant on fossil fuels such as transportation & heating along with switching from fossil fuel generated electricity to renewable and low carbon energy sources.
Nuclear energy can play a significant role in reducing emissions while supporting the development of renewable energy by supplying baseload electricity currently dominated by fossil fuel plants. While there are challenges associated with nuclear energy such as dealing with spent fuel waste, strict regulations, massive up-front costs, and public opposition there are many solutions in development to alleviate these challenges such as modular reactors and facilities that are powered by nuclear waste.
Renewable and nuclear energy should be viewed as partners, both requiring innovation and investment if we are to shift away from fossil fuels and mitigate climate change!
