Human activities have been driving extinctions of species and population declines at an unprecedented rate, estimated to be between 100 and 1,000 times faster than the normal background extinction rate. We rely on a healthy and functioning biosphere for the food we eat, products we produce, countless ecological services and more. There are currently over 1 million species threatened with extinction, along with massive decreases in populations of species that are not threatened.
