Unsustainable forestry practices are prevalent around the world. From Old Growth logging in BC to illegal clear cutting of the Amazon rainforest, it is an issue that carries massive environmental and socio-economic consequences.
Faced with severe deforestation in 1996, the Guatemalan government undertook a conservation experiment putting local communities in charge of managing nearby forests. This local stewardship experiment has resulted in sustainable economic harvests, the continuation of local cultures, thriving ecosystems, and far lower levels of deforestation than elsewhere in Guatemala.
