Watch It Wednesday #10
Currently 85% of the Dominican Republic’s electricity comes from fossil fuels (primarily coal and oil power plants) and around 300,000 people (approximately 2.7% of the population) do not have access to electricity. With aims to generate 25% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025, check out how small-scale solar energy is playing a role in bringing electricity and internet to villages such as Sabana Real, and how larger solar and wind projects will contribute to transitioning the country’s grid at large.
It’s a great example of how we currently have the necessary technologies to sustainably enhance the quality of life in poor rural communities, along with transitioning fossil fuel reliant countries to renewables right now!
